Professor Lamont is a leading scholar in the field of cultural and comparative scoiology with a focus on inequality and boundaries. In her most recent book, "Seeing Others: How Recognition Works and How It Can Heal a Divided World", Professor Lamont invites us to recenter our understanding of inequality. Drawing from nearly four decades of research, Michèle Lamont makes the case for reducing stigma by increasing recognition. In an age that is marked by growing inequality and polarization, Professor Lamont’s latest work aims to give us a new perspective – both on ourselves and others.

About the Speaker:

Michèle Lamont is Professor of Sociology and of African and African American Studies and the Robert I. Goldman Professor of European Studies at Harvard University. Her expertise lies in cultural sociology, with a focus on boundaries and inequality. Professor Lamont has made significant contributions to the understanding of topics such as dignity, respect, stigma, racism, class and racial boundaries, and the evaluation of social worth across societies. Professor Lamont's leadership in the study of culture and inequality has earned her numerous accolades, including the C. Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems for her book "The Dignity of Working Men", the 2014 Guttenberg Award, the 2017 Erasmus Prize, and honorary doctorates from six countries. Besides her contribution to scholarship, Professor Lamont has actively contributed to redefining the field of sociology: To only name some of her engagements, Professor Lamont served as President of the American Sociological Association in 2016 and co-chaired the advisory board to the 2022 United Nations Human Development Report
